SEO or Google Ads First? A Straight Answer for Malta Businesses

It is the question almost every Malta business owner asks before spending a cent on marketing: should I start with SEO or Google Ads? Both get you in front of people searching on Google, but they work in very different ways, cost differently, and pay off on different timelines. Here is a straight answer you can actually use.
THE SHORT ANSWER
If you need customers quickly, start with Google Ads. If you want the cheapest traffic over the long run and you can wait a few months, invest in SEO.
Most businesses that can afford it do both, because together they cover you now and later.
The right choice for you comes down to three things: how fast you need results, your budget, and how competitive your market is.
START WITH GOOGLE ADS IF...
Google Ads puts you at the top of the results the same day you switch it on, so it is the right first move when you need leads now, when you are testing a new offer or market, or when you have a seasonal push that cannot wait.
The trade-off is that the traffic stops the moment you stop paying, and in competitive niches the clicks can be expensive.
But you control the budget completely and you can measure every euro, which makes it the fastest way to start getting enquiries and learning what your customers respond to.
START WITH SEO IF...
SEO is the work of earning the top spots in the normal search results and the map pack, so that customers find you without you paying for each click.
It is the right focus when you can wait a few months for momentum to build, and when you want traffic that keeps coming long after the work is done.
The trade-off is patience.
SEO usually takes a few months before rankings settle, and no one can promise number one on every term. But once you rank, it is the best long-term value in marketing, because the traffic is effectively free and it compounds over time.
WHY MOST MALTA BUSINESSES END UP DOING BOTH
These two are not rivals, they are partners. Google Ads brings in customers while your SEO is still building.
SEO then lowers your reliance on paid traffic over time, so your cost per customer drops.
Running both also means you take up more space on the results page, which builds trust and squeezes out competitors.
A common path that works well: start with Google Ads to get cash flow and data, then reinvest some of those returns into SEO so that, six to twelve months later, a healthy share of your leads arrive without paying per click.
HOW TO DECIDE FOR YOUR BUSINESS
Ask yourself three questions. How soon do you need leads:
this week, or can you build over months? What can you sustain as a monthly budget for at least three months? And how competitive is your market, because crowded sectors make both harder and reward doing them properly.
